What Builders Are Saying
Hal Hamner, VP of Construction, Boone, Boone, Loeb & Pettit
"Cast iron is a high quality material and that speaks to the quality and craftsmanship
of the home I build. The quality of the materials that go behind the walls are as
important as the quality of the materials and appliances the homeowner can touch
and feel."
Tim Carter, Ask The Builder
Question 114: We just moved into a 15-year-old home. Everytime we flush the second
floor toilet, we hear running water down the inside of our living room wall. The
wall isn't wet and I can't find any leaks. What is happening to the water?
Answer: Relax; the water is going down the plumbing stack on its way to the sewer.
Because you do not see any evidence of a leak, I would guess that your plumbing
drainage system is constructed of PVC plastic piping… PVC piping is notorious for
sound transmission. You can often hear a small amount of water traveling down the
pipe… If the piping is PVC, you can replace it with cast-iron piping, which transmits
little noise…

Sharing concerns in a recent meeting, several active, quality-oriented builders
voiced the opinion to me that the overall level of quality and on-site building
efficiency of new home construction across the country has declined over the past
year. Reportedly, some national home builders have actually been closing uncompleted
houses. Of course, warn these top building execs, that's not a very good formula
for future survival and success. The reputation for quality and customer satisfaction
a firm builds now is the one they will have to live with later. Smart builders,
they agree, must find ways to maintain quality and customer focus even in this high
demand marketplace.Solid building quality and high customer satisfaction ratings
will soon be substantial barriers to successful entry into the home building business.
