Pipe's FlowGuard Gold Lead Free Brass Fittings Meet Federal Reduction of Lead in
Drinking Water Act
CHARLOTTE, NC – February 7, 2014 – Charlotte Pipe’s lead-free brass fittings are
compliant with the federal Reduction of Lead in Drinking Water Act, which took effect
January 4, 2014.
In fact, as of January 2, 2012 all of Charlotte Pipe’s CTS CPVC FlowGuard Gold Brass
Fittings sold in the USA have complied with this lead-free regulation. By transitioning
all of our FlowGuard Gold Brass fittings two years before the Reduction of Lead
in Drinking Water Act became effective, our customers did not need to manage multiple
inventories of Charlotte Pipe fittings or consider inventory transitions throughout
Charlotte Pipe’s no lead brass fittings also comply with ANSI/NSF Standard 61 and
ANSI/NSF 372. Our fittings meet ANSI/NSF 14 sections 5.8.1 (Dezincification resistance)
and 5.8.2 (Stress Corrosion resistance) which establish limits for acceptable stress
corrosion cracking and dezincification.
In this video our Director of Product Knowledge Training talks more about our lead free brass fittings.
Other Things To Know:
- The term "lead free" as it relates to any pipe, pipe or plumbing fitting, or fixture
intended to convey or dispense water for drinking or cooking. For these products,
"lead free" means not more than a weighted average lead content of 0.25 percent.
We don’t rely on the weighted average lead content calculation to be “lead free”
compliant. The total lead content of our raw Low Lead material is less than 0.2%.
No matter how many of our Low Lead fittings are used in a system, the total lead
content is less than 0.2%.
- We use brass that is resistant to dezincification. Studies show that even trace
amounts of Chlorine or Ammonia can cause dezincification to occur in plumbing brass.
Chlorine or chlorine mixed with ammonia (chloramine) is used to disinfect potable
water systems. The chemical composition of our raw material makes our fittings less
susceptible to dezincification in these systems.
